More personal and data privacy in local public transport !

25 March 2014 – Press release : More personal and data privacy in local public transport !

Few days ago (12 March 2014), the European Parliament plebiscited a Data Protection Act, to improves our privacy in the times of social media. But we can't wait months or years that all Member States vote and then implement local control procedures !

In the context of the PRISM scandal, with the current spreading of electronic travel cards in local public transport, we need now better privacy control for local public transport passengers.

Big Data or Big Brother ?

Common sense says we don't want unidentified persons may compile each of our bus trip for any use of business or control.

It is in this perspective that, this same day 12 March, we submitted a work program to improve privacy in local public transport, candidate for the Fundamental Rights and Citizenship European Commission program. Our partnership gathers Assoutenti (Italian public service users), Athens Destination Agency (Athens Municipality), Citizens Mobility asbl / We Move (this is us, ie. a European platform for public transport users), IGEB (Berlin public transport users), TrainOSE (Greek national train operator), Fondation Sophia Antipolis (City of Nice technology park, France), Voxcracy (a Sophia Antipolis start-up for inclusive vote, France), Nexus Institute (Berlin Technological University spin-off research center), Rover (Netherlands public transport users).
